PE Funding

OFSTED, April 2015

Pupils enjoy taking part in sporting activities and have a good understanding of how sport contributes to a healthy lifestyle. They look forward to the regular visits of the specialist coach and have benefited from this expertise. Pupils’ interest in sport has been increased and more pupils now participate in additional activities as a result.

Our Aim

At Archibald, it is our aim to inspire and instil a life-long desire to lead a healthy and active lifestyle, by developing a love for physical activity, and educating our pupils on how to lead a healthy lifestyle.

We aim to do this by delivering high quality P.E. lessons that expose our pupils to a variety of sports and activities through an all-encompassing curriculum. By creating links across the curriculum, children will not only develop physical skills, but will become more informed on how to keep their bodies healthy. At Archibald, we aim to ensure other lessons require an active input, allowing our children to be more active throughout the school day.

Furthermore, we believe that developing team spirit and a love of participation is just as important as developing sporting talent. Therefore, we aim to ensure that all pupils are provided with the opportunity to represent the school in sporting competitions and festivals around the city.

P.E. and Sports Premium: Government Grant Funding at Archibald First School

Since 2013, the government has provided additional funding to schools to improve the provision of Physical Education and sport in primary schools. In 2023, it was announced that the funding would continue for 2023-2024 and 2024-2025.

Purpose of the P.E. and Sport Premium

Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of P.E. and sport offered to pupils. Therefore, as a school, we must use this funding to develop, or add to, the P.E. and sporting activities that Archibald already offers. Furthermore, we must aim to make improvements now that will benefit pupils joining the school in future years.

Possible uses of the premium include:

  • provide staff with professional development, mentoring, training and resources to help them teach PE and sport more effectively
  • hire qualified sports coaches to work with teachers to enhance or extend current opportunities
  • introduce new sports, dance or other activities to encourage more pupils to take up sport and physical activities
  • support and involve the least active children by providing targeted activities, and running or extending school sports and holiday clubs
  • enter or run more sport competitions
  • partner with other schools to run sports activities and clubs
  • increase pupils’ participation in the School Games
  • encourage pupils to take on leadership or volunteer roles that support sport and physical activity within the school
  • provide additional swimming provision targeted to pupils not able to meet the swimming requirements of the national curriculum
  • embed physical activity into the school day through active travel to and from school, active playgrounds and active teaching

Please note that this funding is protected and therefore can only be spent on provision of P.E. and sport in schools. Further information on the premium can be found here:
